Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical in the plant known as a phytochemical found in 1940. It’s one of the latest most sought-after alternative medicines, accounting for more than 40 percent of the plant’s therapeutic oil. It bears some resemblance to THC, CBD does not have the same euphoric effect as THC does. CBD is more effective in reducing the inflammatory response of specific immune cells that are known to trigger inflammation of certain tumours. While many people believe CBD has many advantages however, it is important to note that CBD can be extremely potent and may cause serious side effects if ingested in excess.

It has been known for a while that CBD can be used as a substitute for alcohol in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The most recent breakthrough was made by the lab of Michael J. Gerber at the University of Pittsburgh, where Gerber and his colleagues released their findings in the Journal of Human Evolution. The Pittsburgh lab has recently been used in the development of F.D.A. cannabidiol.

Gerber’s research showed that “the main reason we were successful was identifying the substances that provide us with the highest quality without any side effects that are common with CBD.” CBD was once considered an intoxicant. It offered little to no medical advantages. CBD is not an amino acid, rather , it is a phytochemical that comes from the endocannabinoids, which are present in marijuana, hemp and a few other plant species. They function as a natural antidepressant. Recent research at John Hopkins University has confirmed that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and could reduce seizures in children suffering from uncontrolled epilepsy.

However, even though CBD is generally regarded to be safe, including occasional use with caution, there’s been little definitive evidence on the effects on health of CBD when taken in combination with other medicinal drugs. Numerous studies on CBD as well as its active components have been done in animals given CBD as well as other drugs. While there is not much information about CBD’s long-term effects on humans however, there is evidence to suggest that CBD may be toxic under certain conditions.

Recent reports from the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Power suggest that CBD may have psychoactive effects. Particularly, the committee was interested in studying the effects of CBD on patients who had been prescribed Dronabinone which is an anti-epileptic medication used to treat heroin addiction. The committee concluded that Dronabinol is effective for reducing both the desire to experience a high as well as the desire to take the same dose again in order to feel better. The report does not mention if other medications are used in conjunction with CBD to alleviate narcotic pain.

It is unclear from the available evidence whether CBD is as effective at relieving anxiety as an illicit drug like cannabis, or even more effective than psychostimulants like Ritalin. It is the fact that CBD is almost identical in chemical composition to the active ingredient of cannabis (cannabis sativa) which suggests that CBD may have less of an impact on the mental state of the user than a psychoactive pharmaceutical like cannabis. However, there aren’t any recorded side effects of CBD for humans. CBD could be able to reduce anxiety and/or seizures in dogs, as epilepsy sufferers have been treated with CBD. It could also possess serotonergic properties that can help with anxiety in humans. However, the CBD doesn’t appear to have any serotonergic properties for humans.

In addition to the reported lack of side effects, there is some evidence that CBD could prove beneficial as a natural treatment for a variety of ailments such as migraine headaches, asthma indigestion, menstrual disorders and menstrual cramps and is effective in treating recreational marijuana use. The US government has not yet approved CBD for sale as a prescribed medication. However, CBD can be used by minors. Although hemp is grown in all parts of the USA, CBD tends to be located in the southern part of the nation, in states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida. The production rates differ based on the availability of industrial hemp. According to the hemp lobby, the federal government has yet not formally approved CBD cultivation as a medicine or for medical use.

While CBD does not have the same mind-altering effects as THC but it has been demonstrated in some instances to decrease nausea. There is evidence that CBD could assist with seizure and anxiety disorders. As mentioned above the sole known health benefit of CBD is its reduction in the appetite that is caused by alcohol withdrawal. CBD is usually smoked, rather than ingested as THC and therefore, it is likely to be less harmful than cannabis. However, since CBD lacks the same mind-altering, psychoactive properties of cannabis and THC, it is less risky than smoking cannabis. As stated above further research is required to evaluate the full health benefits of CBD when compared to cannabis.
